Open a project plan in much of Europe or inside a manufacturing company and you will find dates written not as "6 July" but as "week 28". Whole industries schedule, report, and plan by week number rather than by calendar date. It is compact, it groups naturally into quarters, and it sidesteps the awkwardness of months that are 28, 30, or 31 days long.
But the moment you ask "which week are we in?" the simple idea sprouts surprising rules. Is the first week of January always week 1? What happens to the days at the very start of the year? And how can a year possibly have 53 weeks? The answers are all pinned down by an international standard called ISO 8601, and once you know its three key rules, week numbering stops being mysterious.
What a "week number" actually means
A week number is simply the position of a given week within its year, from 1 up to 52 or 53. Week 1 is the first week, week 26 sits around the midpoint, and week 52 is usually the last. The appeal is that it turns a fuzzy human phrase like "early July" into a precise, sortable label. You can pin down any week with a week number calculator rather than counting on your fingers.
The catch is that "the first week" needs a definition, and different systems answer that differently. North American calendars often treat the week containing 1 January as week 1 and start weeks on Sunday. The ISO standard — the one businesses and software lean on — does something more careful.
The three rules of ISO 8601 weeks
The ISO system rests on three tidy rules that, taken together, remove every ambiguity:
- Weeks start on Monday. The week runs Monday through Sunday, always. There is no Sunday-start option in the ISO scheme.
- Week 1 contains the year's first Thursday. Equivalently, it is the week that contains 4 January. Whichever way you phrase it, the rule points to the same seven days.
- Every week belongs to the year that holds most of its days — which is exactly what rules 1 and 2 guarantee, since the Thursday is the week's midpoint.
Why January days can belong to last year
Here is the consequence that catches people out. Because week 1 must contain the first Thursday, the first day or two of January can end up assigned to the *previous* year's final week.
Take a year that begins on a Friday. That Friday, Saturday, and Sunday sit in a week whose Thursday fell back in December — so those early-January days are part of the old year's week 52 or 53. Only from the following Monday does the new year's week 1 begin. It feels odd to write "1 January = week 52", but it keeps every week a clean, unbroken Monday-to-Sunday block.
The years with 53 weeks
Most years have 52 weeks, which accounts for 364 days — one short of a normal year, two short of a leap year. Those leftover days accumulate, and every so often they push a year to a full 53 weeks.
A year has 53 ISO weeks when it starts on a Thursday, or when it is a leap year that starts on a Wednesday. That works out to roughly 71 years in every 400. When one of these years rolls around, systems that assume a maximum of 52 weeks can drop data or crash on "week 53" — a small but real source of end-of-year bugs.

ISO weeks vs the "week containing 1 January" system
The main rival convention, common in the United States, simply says week 1 is whatever week contains 1 January, and often counts weeks from Sunday. It is more intuitive at first glance but produces stub weeks — a "week 1" that might be only a day or two long.

- Manufacturing and supply chains — production is scheduled and reported by week, and date codes stamped on products often encode the week.

How to find an ISO week number by hand
Find the Thursday of the week in question
Take your date and move to the Thursday of its Monday-to-Sunday week. That Thursday decides everything.
Confirm which year owns the week
The year of that Thursday is the ISO year for the whole week, even if your date itself sits in December or January of the neighbouring year.
Count weeks from the first Thursday
Week 1 is the one holding that year's first Thursday. Count how many Thursdays have occurred up to and including yours — that count is the week number.
It is a reliable method, but fiddly for anything beyond a single lookup. For day-to-day use, let software apply the rules — the standard exists precisely so machines can agree on the answer.
Weeks, quarters, and the 4-4-5 calendar
Because 52 weeks divide cleanly into four quarters of 13 weeks, week numbers slot neatly into quarterly reporting. Many retailers take this further with a 4-4-5 calendar, splitting each quarter into "months" of four, four, and five weeks. It keeps every reporting month a whole number of weeks, so like-for-like sales comparisons always line up on the same weekdays — a Saturday is always compared with a Saturday.
The trade-off is that a 4-4-5 year contains exactly 52 weeks, or 364 days, a day or two short of a real calendar year. That slack is absorbed by an occasional 53-week year — the very same leap-week mechanism ISO weeks rely on. It is also why a retailer's internal "week 40" and the strict ISO "week 40" can drift apart unless both sides agree on the same starting rule and reference date.
